”Mabuhay!” translates to the Filipino expression “long live” as the community of Fort Macleod cheered and celebrated the 128th anniversary of Philippine independence this year. With numerous festivities planned, the Fort Macleod Filipino-Canadian Culture Society (FMFCCS) kicked off the annual celebration at Centennial Park on June 6. Marking its sixth year, the festivities commenced with a traditional flag-raising ceremony to celebrate their heritage and acknowledge their roots. Participants reveled in vibrant dances, songs, and a variety of Filipino cuisine including the beloved Filipino “Ice-Candy” which was distributed to the spectators as a delightful dessert, not to mention the warm temperature that helped brighten up the mood.
Elder Bettyann Little Wolf of the Piikani First Nation initiated the event and offered a blessing for the occasion. The atmosphere was vibrant along with the enthusiastic crowd excited for the event, they were entertained by outstanding performers from the following: the Cordillera group, Fort Macleod Cultural dancers, Fort Macleod Phil-Can Youth, Summer Veer and Surveen, Standoff Colony Choir, the Jesus Is Lord (JIL) Fort Macleod- Lethbridge and the A’sitapiiksi Powwow Club.
