Recently, St. Joseph’s School in Coaldale received a Community Foundation Youth In Action grant.

The grant is being used for percussion kits at the school.

Grade 9 student Tanner Lockwood, who applied for the grant, said the $1,000 grant is for the music department.

“That will help a lot of percussion kids — both the old ones and the younger ones,” said the 14-year-old musician, adding the money will go towards purchasing new drum kits.

Lockwood noted he decided to apply for the grant because he felt the music department at the school was in need of new instruments.

According to Lockwood, he has been playing music for over 7 years. He plays piano and trumpet. The grant was presented at a recent Christmas concert.
