Council briefs in ‘Butte

Council approves Jamboree Days requests
Picture Butte town council will once again provide financial assistance for the annual Jamboree Days coming up in August. The Picture Butte and District Agricultural Society heads up the organization of the community celebration each year. The town contributes $5,000 annually toward the fireworks display, as part of the Jamboree weekend. Council has also agreed to once again host the civic reception for parade participants.
Fire services discussion
Picture Butte town council has approved a motion to meet again with Fire Chief Dave Feist over the fire services agreement between the town and Lethbridge County. Before town council signs off on the new agreement, a motion was passed to invite the fire chief to an upcoming meeting with council to discuss the details of the agreement.
Arena rates
Once the skating season in Picture Butte comes to an end, renters of the arena will be subject to new off-season arena rates. Town council has approved the rates to be charged for use of the facility outside of the hockey and skating season. The arena can be rented for $30 an hour or $180 a day. A damage deposit of $500 will also be charged to renters. During the off-season the arena is used for a number of community and private functions during the summer months.
Event insurance
Town administration has clarified an insurance issue with council for community events. Interim Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Keith Davis reported at one time community events could be added to a municipality’s insurance but that is no longer the case. If community groups in Picture Butte want to host a community event, they will have to secure their own event insurance.
Pool development
Town council in Picture Butte has directed administration to contact a landowner over the possibility of acquiring land for a potential expansion of recreational facilities in the community. The pool expansion project, currently in the planning stages, is looking to take place on what is currently privately owned land. Council approved the motion with the addition a member of town council also be involved in the land discussion with the owner.
