After a meeting held Jan. 5, Frank West was elected as the new fire chief for Picture Butte and District Emergency Services.
West only recently took on the duty of deputy fire chief this past November. The town’s previous Fire Chief Dave Feist recently announced his retirement from the department.
“We had our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and due to Dave announcing his retirement, we went through our election process for a new fire chief and the members selected myself. And it went to town council to be approved,” West explained.
On Jan. 9, Town of Picture Butte council ratified and approved West, as the town’s new fire chief effective Jan. 10.
As for a new deputy fire chief, West said, a decision hasn’t been made quite yet.
“I will be probably within the next month deciding. I have to speak to a few of the parties involved and make sure they’re willing to take on the extra workload,” he joked.
According to West, members of the department put his name forward on Jan. 5 and no one else decided to throw their name in.
“It wasn’t much of a vote — more of an acclamation,” he added.
West said he is completely honoured being selected as the head honcho by his peers.
“That they have the confidence in me to give me the position, not that I’ve had much time to prepare as the deputy chief, not that anything’s brand new to me. I’m excited to take on the role and keep the department moving forward,” West said.
