Emergency crews responded to a large fire in a warehouse at the Green Prairie facility east of Lethbridge this past Wednesday evening just off of Highway 3.

The fire started shortly after 7 p.m., with a reported 15 apparatus from Lethbridge and Coaldale fire stations put into helping to battle the blaze.

Fire crews were able to make use of an adjacent irrigation canal as a water supply to help fight the fire. RCMP and Lethbridge Police were also called into assist at the scene. The 58,000 square-foot warehouse containing forage product sent a large black plume of smoke into the clear evening sky, with smoke still present over the next few days.

The Green Prairie International forage processor and supply facility has been the scene of a number of major fires dating back over the years. Early damage estimates are reported at approximately $5 million, with no injuries to firefighters or civilians on the scene.

There is still no official word on the cause of the fire.
