Figure skaters in Coaldale took their audience on an enchanted journey this past weekend.
On March 12, the club hosted An Enchanted Journey — Take 2, where their skaters were able to showcase their skills in a carnival for the first time in two years. The first Enchanted Journey carnival was cancelled back in 2020.
“Enchanted — Take 2 is a whimsical journey through popular fairy tale favourites — again,” said Carley Campbell, president of the CFSC. “In 2020, our year-end Carnival, An Enchanted Journey, was cancelled the night before it was to take place due to the pandemic. Enchanted — Take 2 provides a wonderful way to utilize the hard work invested in the decorations, costumes and routines from 2020. It was an easy decision to take 2!”
This year’s carnival featured about 60 skaters from CFSC’s PreCan, CanSkate and StarSkate programs, ranging from ages 4-17. A special guest star skater, Brooklyn Watmough from the Lethbridge Skating Club, also made an appearance. Carley said this year’s carnival would be filled with “full of energy and fun”.
The club was able to use many of the original decorations, costumes and routines from the 2020 carnival, although a few costumes needed to be replaced due to skaters outgrowing them. However, this year’s carnival will feature some new songs, skaters and updated routines compared to the original Enchanted Journey. The club offered families the option of live-streaming the show over Zoom, so that family members who were unable to attend or felt more comfortable viewing it at home could still watch the show.
Restrictions had meant that the club was unable to hold a carnival in both 2020 and 2021. Campbell noted that there were times during this skating season where they thought that they would be unable to hold the carnival again.
“Needless to say, all members of the Coaldale Figure Skating Club are thrilled to be hosting a Carnival this year, allowing our skaters to showcase all the skills they’ve mastered this season,” said Campbell. “There is definitely excitement from our skaters to perform. Many of our skaters have not been part of a Carnival, so this will be an amazing experience for them. Our StarSkaters are definitely ready to show how they have improved over the past two years.”
