Nine municipalities along the eastern stretch of Highway 3 have received a grant to study working jointly on potable water delivery in the area, Southern Alberta Newspapers has learned.

The $200,000 grant from the Alberta Community Partnership program would be used in the “Regional Potable Water Concept Development Study Along Highway 3 Corridor.”

In the fall, the City of Medicine Hat supported the application put forward by the Town of Coaldale and heavily promoted by Taber-Warner MLA Grant Hunter.

It would see municipalities determine the size of their water licences and requirements as part of a larger look at capacity and agri-food industrial development.

A second, similar study would examine waste water treatment capacity, and municipalities could identify other selling features, such as potential industrial sites.

The municipalities include the cities of Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, as well as the counties of Cypress, Forty Mile, and Lethbridge, the Municipal District and Town of Taber, the towns of Bow Island and Coaldale and the Village of Barnwell.
