The Friends of Jennie Emery Society (FOJES) is gearing up for a night of fundraising and nostalgia.

In celebration of its 30th birthday, the society is hosting a fundraising gala this Saturday, March 16 in the gymnasium of Jennie Emery Elementary School in Coaldale.

Organizer and Chairperson for the Friends of Jennie Emery Society, Danie Lawrence said the society, “took a good look at our fundraising efforts at the end of the year last year and wanted to expand on what we were doing and plan an event that involved not only the FOJES and school but the community as well to keep close to our mission statement. It worked out well that the year we looked at this it was the school’s 30th birthday.”

Lawrence said the night promises to be a night to remember, and that attendees can expect, “a retro throwback to the 90’s with all the trimmings of a gala. Dinner, live auction, silent auction and a dance that we promise will cover the best era of 90’s jams. Maybe even a little 90’s trivia!”

Funds raised will help support various projects such as field trips, transportation to activities, guest speakers, early learning celebrations, grade four farewells, kindergarten “graduations” and an inclusive playground expansion.

Lawrence added community contributions go a long way to ensuring the event is a success and lays the groundwork for future opportunities for students.

“We give back by supporting the students of the school. Currently there are approx 360-380 registered students at Jennie Emery and we fundraise to say yes to opportunity for them. We believe that all children should have the ability to learn, attend and participate in activities without parents having to carry the cost burden all on their own.”

Nearly everything the FOJES spearheads are local to the community of Coaldale, and noted the elementary school is a pillar of the community and a unifying space for many community members.

“This community loves this school and there is a deep relationship between community and school as most students from the area have either gone there themselves or have family that currently does. Friends of Jennie Emery aims to be the bridge between community and school and I think with this support we are doing an amazing job,” said Lawrence.

Those interested in supporting this event have the option to purchase for eight for $800. Half tables for four are also being offered for $450, as well as single tickets for $120 each.
