During the May 19 Town of Coalhurst Council meeting, Town of Coalhurst Chief Administrative Officer Karlene Betteridge brought the 2026 Mill Rate Bylaw to Council’s attention with the recommendation that all three readings be approved.

“This is following budget deliberations and finalization of Lethbridge County’s mill rate bylaw,” explained Betteridge. “We’re now able to present to Council 2026 mill rate bylaw which is reflective of the earlier budget that Council has approved.”

Betteridge then highlighted a table to show the differences in the mill rates from 2025 to 2026.

Betteridge also highlighted a portion of the RFD that stated as the residential mill rate dropped, the decrease for the municipal portion of taxation on a typical residential property assessed at $300,000 is estimated at approximately $99 per year, or $8.25 per month, the non-residential mail rate increased due to that assessment not increasing to the same extent as the residential, and a non-residential property will have an increase in the municipal portion of taxation of approximately $4.15 per year, per $100,000 of assessment.

Betteridge also stated that the 2026 total tax levy against the assessment base of $389,664,920 is composed of approximately $2,750,875 in municipal taxation, $1,054,618 in Alberta School Foundation Fund (ASFF) and Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Separate Regional Division requisitions, and $53,927 in other requisitions (Green Acres Foundation and Designated Industrial Property).

“Taxes that are collected fund Town operations and are the primary source of operating cash flow,” explained Betteridge.

Councilor Harasem then made a motion that Council approve first reading of 2026 Mill Rate Bylaw number 473-26 and the motion was carried. Councillor Slingsby also made the motion that Council approve second reading of 2026 Mill Rate Bylaw number 473-26 and the motion was carried. Deputy Mayor Potrie then made the motion that Council approve third reading of 2026 Mill Rate Bylaw number 473-26 and the motion was carried.
