Lethbridge County hockey teams hit the ice for tournament play

A totally packed Coaldale Snake Pit on Saturday night saw the local Coaldale Copperheads advancing to the HJHL south final.
In a best of seven series against Strathmore — an extremely tough series, with home advantage being a huge factor in the final deciding game.
Saturday night the Snakes came out strong pulling ahead 3-0 but again the Wheatland Kings battled back and before you knew it by the end of the first period the game was tied.
Coaching staff must of had a huge speech during first intermission, as the players came out on fire and owned the second period scoring three more goals.
Come the end of the second period it was 6-3. Third period action was exciting and the team played confident with making careful decisionS.
A few minutes left in the game Strathmore scored their final goal of the series, which was not enough, as the Copperheads won with a 6-4 victory.
This win advances the team to the HJHL South Final again to have home advantage, which will be against Okotoks Bisons.
Copperheads finished first and Okotoks was third during regular season play this season. The winner of this series will advance to the league final the week following and get to participate at provincials.
Admission price will be the same for this round with adults $8 and youth $4. Please bring exact cash change if possible for admission and come early for seats.
The first home playoff games will be held in Coaldale on Mar. 4 at 8:30 p.m. The remaining games of the series to be announced.
The Picture Butte Elks Novice Blades are advancing to round two in the Spud League playoffs after defeating the Kainai Chiefs in a two game series this past weekend.
The Blades hosted the Chiefs on Friday night in Picture Butte. The arena was packed with fans cheering on both teams in game one of the series. The Blades were able to squeak out a 5-4 win over the Chiefs.
Riley Hillaby popped in three goals for the Blades, while Cam Hillaby and Connor O’Donnell each scored one.
Leland Gellrich, Braxton Hanna and Kyler Stroeve helped their team to victory with an assist each.
Game two of the series was played in Stand Off on Saturday morning. The Chiefs and the Blades both hit the ice flying and the game was tied 2-2 at the end of the first with Riley Hillaby scoring both for the Blades. The second period was a nail biter, with the Blades finding the back of the net five more times.
Connor O’Donnell and Riley Hillaby each scored twice and Kyler Stroeve scored once in the second period. The Blades were able to clinch the win in the third with three more goals, two from Kyler Stroeve and one from Cam Hillaby.
Assists came from Leland Gellrich (2), Riley Hillaby (3), Rayann Campmans (1), Connor O’Donnell (2) and Leeland Fraser.
Evan McLeod stayed strong in net during both games. The players (and their parents) are very proud of the big wins this weekend and are looking forward to round two coming up next weekend.
The Picture Butte Don Shimek UFA Initiation #1 Blades travelled to Coaldale for their last tournament of the season.
Game one of the tournament matched the Blades up against the Coaldale #1 Cobras.
The Blades skated fast and furious but weren’t quite able to keep up in the scoring department.
Grady McLeod scored two for the Blades and Tanner Quinn scored once.
Grady McLeod was awarded the “Digger Award” for game one of the tournament.
Saturday afternoon’s game found the Blades playing the Brooks Senators. Tanner Quinn scored a hat trick, and Gavin Johnson and Grady McLeod each scored once.
Ryan Serfas helped out with two assists. Jayden Quinn was awarded the “Digger Award” for Saturday’s game.
Bright and early Sunday morning the Blades met up against Chestermere in the last game of the tourney.
Grady McLeod scored a hat trick and Devin Groenenboom scored once for the Blades.
Sunday’s “Digger Award” went to Emma Groenenboom.
The Initiation team is hosting the Coaldale #1 Cobras in Butte on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
Coaldale Cobras Inititiation held their tournament this past weekend.
With the end of the year fast approaching, the Cobras Initiation 1 team won all three of their games in the tournament.
The team started off on Friday night playing the Picture Butte Blades. With a final score of 10-3.
Hat tricks for this game went to #4 Lane Kyle. Other Cobras goals went to #10 Marco Burnett (2), #6 Kayden Mellafon t(2), #5 Teal’c Widmer (1), #8 Shaun Traber (1), and #13 Mason Noble (1).
Saturday afternoon’s game was against the Chestermere Lakers with a final score of 18-5.
Cobras hat tricks went to #10 Marco Burnett, #5 Teal’c Widmer and #8 Shaun Traber.
Other Cobras goals went to #12 Caitlin McDonald (2), #9 Mahala Welby (1), #4 Lane Kyle (2), #11 Kade Van Buuren (1), #6 Kayden Mellafont (1), #13 Mason Noble (1), and #2 Karter Van Buuren (1).
Sunday’s game the Cobras played the Brooks Senators with another win of 11-8.
Cobras hat trick for this game went to #6 Kayden Mellafont.
Other goals went to #5 Teal’c Widmer (2), #4 Lane Kyle (2), #14 Mason Van Ee (1), #3 Remy Vucurevich (1), #10 Marco Burnett (1), and #8 Shaun Traber (1).
The Cobras finished off the weekend with their sticks held high and a victory lap around the ice.
