Lethbridge County is suspending drop-in and walk-in services at their planning and development offices due to reports of threats of violence against County employees.
The concerns raised involve a warning letter that Lethbridge County recently issued to a resident, under the County’s Land Use Bylaw pertaining to signage on a rural property.
In a statement issued Friday afternoon, April 24, the County said they “were aware of recent public commentary” regarding the warning letter.
“To be clear, the County does not regulate viewpoints or political beliefs. The Land Use Bylaw governs the placement, size, and type of signage to ensure consistency, safety, and compatibility with surrounding land uses across all properties in the County,” read the statement. “These rules apply equally, regardless of the message displayed.”
The statement noted in this case, the warning letter was issued “based on non-compliance with those established regulations,” and said it is part of routine enforcement carried out in communities across Alberta every day.
“We recognize and respect that freedom of expression is a fundamental value in Canada. At the same time, the law is clear that municipalities may set reasonable, content-neutral rules respecting how and where signage is displayed,” read the statement.
The statement also highlighted concerns over staff safety.
“We are concerned by reports that this matter has led to repeated threats of violence directed at Lethbridge County employees. Threats or harassment of any kind are unacceptable,” read the statement. “The safety and well-being of our staff is a priority for us, and we are taking appropriate steps to support them.”
The matter has been referred to law enforcement for action.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we are suspending drop in and walk in service at our offices for planning and development matters for the foreseeable future,” the statement continued. “The Planning and Development team remains available to assist with development permits, subdivisions and other inquiries by appointment only.”
Residents can call (403) 328-5525 or email development@lethcounty.ca to book an appointment.
“Lethbridge County remains committed to fair, consistent, and respectful administration of its bylaws. We encourage residents to engage constructively and to raise questions or concerns through appropriate channels.”
