The Village of Barons is celebrating its Annual Family Fun Day on July 4.
For more than 100 years, the Village has welcomed residents and visitors for the annual event, bringing the community together every July for a variety of activities, festivities and family fun.
This year the event begins with a pancake breakfast at the Community Hall from 8 to 10 a.m., followed by a parade down Main Street at 11 a.m. The Barons Ag Society is hosting a number of activities at the Community Hall, including a Farmer’s Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., kids games from 12 to 3 p.m., with help from the Barons-Eureka-Warner Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) and a roast beef dinner from 5-6:30 p.m.
“We like to get the whole community out. We have all the groups involved to try to put something on with each organization,” said Mary Bishop, president of the Barons Legion. “We’re hoping to see a good crowd.”
Bishop said the event brings people out to all corners of the Village, with several places open and festivities happening throughout the day.
Those festivities also include a Show n’ Shine on Main Street near the gazebo, following the parade until 3 p.m. and the Barons Legion will be open after the parade for hamburgers, refreshments and a beer garden, all for purchase. In addition, the Barons Seniors Drop In Centre will feature art displays following the parade until 3 p.m., the Barons History Centre will have several sports displays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the United Church Thrift Shop is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Bishop also noted the Barons Legion is celebrating 80 years while the Canadian Legion is celebrating its Centennial and the Legion float in this years parade will pay homage to both milestone anniversaries.
“We’re hoping for a good display of cars and trucks and whatever people want to put in the Show n’ Shine, like motorcycles,” she said, noting ribbons and prizes will be awarded, as will ribbons and prizes for parade entries, awarded by the Barons Elks.
George Hebenik, president of the Barons Ag Society, said the annual event used to host baseball tournaments but has changed over the years to include other activities.
“We got FCSS doing games and the Ag Society is supplying prizes for the games. There’s a Farmer’s Market plus vendors with crafts,” said Hebenik, noting local Hutterite colonies participate in the market and will include vendors from across Southern Alberta.
Visitors and residents will also have the chance to enjoy some sports history at the Barons History Centre, where they can view several displays during the Barons Family Fun Day.
Betty Anne Turner is president of the Barons Historical Society and president of the Barons Senior Citizens Society, and said she is looking forward to sharing a bit of Barons sport history with locals and visitors.
“It’s exciting to see their uniforms from 1915,” said Turner, pointing to a photo of a Barons baseball team from 1915 – one of the oldest items that will be on display. “A lot of people that have family (from Barons), have donated their pictures.”
Bishop also pointed out the art displays at the Senior Drop In Centre and the art contributions from Barons residents over the years.
“We have quite a few paintings on our walls at the (Senior’s) Drop-In, and we thought it would be nice to showcase more of the artists that are in the area, whether it’s a craft or an arts display,” said Bishop. “There’s going to be a variety of past and present (artists).”
