The Coaldale Copperheads split this weekend’s playoff games, losing at home Saturday night, then rebounding to take a two to one lead in the series on Sunday afternoon in Okotoks, The high scoring 31 total goals series, with unprecedented scoring in the first period, continued with Saturday night’s contest.
Coaldale struck first, but the Bisons replied with four goals by the end of the first frame. Coaldale eventually clawed back to within one goal but ran out of time with heavy pressure in the third period to the final score of five to four. The Copperheads received single goals from Ty Mackenzie, Ryan Swier — while Clay Spencer tallied twice.
Sunday afternoon in Okotoks it was the Copperheads that started strong led by a hat trick in the first by Connor Gross. The Copperheads scored five goals in the first frame and the Bisons replied three times.
Coaldale eventually prevailed with a seven to six victory, taking a two to one lead in the best of seven series.
Besides Connor Gross, the team had goals from James Price, Ryan Swier, Clay Spencer and defenseman Mackenzie Karl. Dillan Kelly faced a total of 79 shots total in both games between the pipes.
Game four goes Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. at the Coaldale Arena. Friday its back to Okotoks for game five.
