As Remembrance Day approaches, Coalhurst Council recently discussed creating a commemorative veteran crosswalk in town.
During the Oct. 20 Town of Coalhurst regular council meeting, councillors discussed the commemorative crosswalk near the Coalhurst Legion Branch 273, at the intersection of 6 Street and 52 Ave., as a meaningful community remembrance initiative.
The initiative was put forth by Coalhurst Mayor Deb Florence.
“We’re coming up on Remembrance Day and we know that we really value the Coalhurst Legion in our community,” said Florence, noting the town’s desire to do something to symbolize their appreciation for the Coalhurst Legion – a meaningful community initiative that could also help inform future initiatives.
“When we talk about our public art policies or even road art, in terms of slowing people down, it could be used as an interesting visual,” said Florence. “If we start with the legion crosswalk …I just think it’d be a really nice thing to do and maybe potentially have some ability to lead into other areas and inform some other projects that we do as well.”
Prior to councillors discussion, Florence said she was “very hopeful” that the commemorative crosswalk could potentially be done this year.
Following discussion, councillors voted to direct administration to prepare a memo regarding the proposed installation of a commemorative crosswalk at 6 Street and 52 Ave. to honour the Coalhurst Legion, Branch 273, and further that the memo shall address at minimum, a consultation with the Legion and pedestrian safety information, preliminary cost estimates, and maintenance obligations.
Administration is now working on the information requested for the upcoming memo to Council. Once the information is received, Council will decide on the next steps.
