As victories go, it doesn’t get much more exciting than a shootout victory at home.
In a Saturday-night showdown at the Snakepit, the Coaldale Copperheads needed every last minute, and then some, to take a 2-1 win over the Wheatland Kings, after regulation and overtime solved nothing.
After a scoreless first period, Nash Wassing opened the scoring in the game with a second-period goal for Wheatland.
It stayed 1-0 for the visitors until Cohen Richardson tied things up on a goal set up by Lincoln Weiss and Ryan Holm.
After a scoreless overtime frame, the goaltenders took centre stage in the skills competition, as Copperheads netminder Brylin Noble turned away all three Wheatland shooters.
After Barrett Van Nistelrooy was stopped, Richardson lit the lamp for Coaldale, which stood up as the game winner.
It was a goaltending duel for the ages, as Noble made 36 saves and Connor White made 34 stops for Wheatland.
This week, Coaldale will head to Cochrane for a game on Friday, for another one-game weekend.
Coaldale is now 5-3 on the season, good enough for 10 points, and fourth place in the South Division.
