On Oct. 26, the final section of the Highway 3 Twinning Project between Grassy Lake and Burdett transitioned from temporary construction routes to the new permanent four-lane highway.
Phase 1: Pre-Opening
Activities – Complete
Crews completed final pavement markings, installed remaining permanent signage, finished roadway lighting, and prepared the highway for traffic. Temporary detours remained in place during this stage.
Phase 2: Taber to Grassy Lake Traffic Transition –
Complete
Eastbound traffic between Taber and the Grassy Lake Detour was shifted onto the newly constructed eastbound lanes. Westbound traffic remained on its current alignment.
Phase 3: Grassy Lake to
Burdett Traffic Transition – Oct. 26
As part of this final transition, the Grassy Lake Detour has been removed, and traffic has moved onto its permanent roadway configuration. Motorists travelling between Grassy Lake and Burdett will begin using the new Highway 3 alignment that bypasses Grassy Lake.
Drivers are still reminded to:
• Watch for temporary traffic control measures
• Be aware of changing traffic patterns and lane configurations
• Pay close attention to stop signs and intersection changes
• Expect minor delays as crews complete the transition
Phase 4: Post-Opening
Activities
Following the opening, crews will continue with final cleanup work, pavement marking removal, and the removal of temporary detour infrastructure. Some temporary lane closures and reduced speed limits may remain in place while this work is completed.
“Thank you to motorists, residents, and businesses for your patience throughout construction as this important transportation corridor reaches its final stage of completion,” reads a statement from the MD of Taber.
