Prairie Winds Secondary School in Coaldale implemented a hold and secure procedure following an incident on the morning of Thurs. May 1.

The actions taken were out of an abundance of caution and according to school officials, who spoke with the Sunny South News Thursday afternoon, the incident was very minor in nature and was resolved quickly.

In a letter from the school’s vice-principal Kimberly Alexander, that was sent out to the school community Thursday, they reassured parents and caregivers that both students and staff at the school were safe. The letter was also posted to the Coaldale Community Awareness Facebook page but was later removed that afternoon.

The letter stated that there was “an incident that occurred this morning as students arrived at Coaldale Prairie Winds Secondary. An unknown male engaged in conversation with some students and made some statements that caused concern.”

It also stated that police were immediately notified and the suspect was apprehended, adding that “as a precautionary measure, the school will be increasing adult supervision outside for the time being, pending further communication and direction from the police.”

The letter said the school was very proud of students and staff for “their calm and responsible conduct during this situation” and noted that counselling would be available to any students “who may be feeling upset or anxious about the incident.”

Sunny South News reached out to the Coaldale RCMP detachment but did not hear back from them before press time. Further details surrounding this incident are not known.
