It appears the HJHL South Division is a tight race for the leading league spot again this season.
The Coaldale Copperheads, currently with a 9-1-0 record, is two points behind the Cochrane Generals.
The two top teams have not met each other as of yet this season but up to play the following weekend.
The Copperheads suffered their first loss Thanksgiving weekend against Mountain View but gained ground the other games.
This past weekend, with a road trip on Friday night to Stettler, the team skated to a 8-3 victory.
Captain Ryan Swier found the back of the net three times playing a strong game individually. Other single goals came from Matt Krusky, Jayden Smith and Tyler Anderson. Dylan Swanson stopped 28-of-31 shots to snag the win.
Saturday night at home the Snakes faced off against the current top-standing north division Airdrie Thunder. The game showcased not a whole bunch of goals for the crowd but a quick-paced, end-to-end three periods of hockey.
Copperheads’ Sam Paskuski received the opening goal of the game putting the team with a 1-0 lead after the first. Mid-way through the second, Airdrie tied the game and the game stayed the 1-1 score until near the end of the third period.
Newcomer, Lethbridge product Tyler Anderson, had a solid weekend (second goal of the weekend) and solidified the game winning goal with six minutes left in regulation. Goal keeper Dillan Kelly made 35 saves to edge Airdrie with a final score of 2-1.
The upcoming weekend is probably going to be one of the most important league games of the season, as the teams meets their competitor Cochrane Generals. The game will be played on home ice on Oct. 22 at 8:30 p.m.
The evening will also be the team’s annual cancer fundraiser evening.
As per usual, there will be a Bake Sale in the lobby, as a fundraiser for cancer. The sale is open to everyone and it really is a fun night.
The Copperheads are requesting bake sale donations to be dropped off in the lobby from 6 p.m. until game time.
The more participants donating baked goodies and making purchases the better, in order to raise cash for this cause.
If you have not made it out to the Snake Pit this season yet, it would be a wise choice to attend this Saturday, as it is going to be one of the highlight evenings of the season.
