Youth fishing fans will be heading to the Picture Butte Reservoir (south side) for the 10th Annual Eddy Stroeve Memorial Fishing Derby June 3, rain or shine.
“Registration is at the Picture Butte Fish and Game Building. Registration starts at noon. Fishing starts at 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. We serve a meal — hotdogs, hamburgers, chocolate bars, donuts, and pop to the kids and adults between 12-1 p.m.,” said Aubrey Fletcher, fishing chair. Prizes to be awarded at 3:30 p.m.
There is a $5 registration fee for adults and kids.
“All the kids get a prize and only one adult gets a prize. It’s youth-orientated and for the youth,” he noted.
Last year, Fletcher added, there were 117 anglers in total.
“Registration has increased every year for the last five years — more kids and more adults, but mostly kids though,” he said.
Prizes, Fletcher said, are provided by the Picture Butte Fish and Game Association.
“We don’t ask for donations, but if people offer a donation, we take it. But, we don’t ask for donations for this derby. It’s kind of a giving back to the community type deal,” Fletcher explained.
Fletcher said the derby is always exciting for local kids. “To see the kids and listen to them when they catch fish. They get pretty excited, some of them. For a lot of them, they only fish once a year and that’s at this derby. And, every youth gets a prize,” he said.
